Are you or someone you know a musician or music industry worker who has OHP?
On October 22nd, 2026, JWF is providing in-person support with OHP changes ahead. Please read more here and tell your music friends!
“State health officials have estimated that roughly 462,000 Oregon Health Plan members could be subject to the new work and reporting requirements.“[3] This applies to most musicians and music workers who are considered independent contractors.

Beginning in 2027, there will be new rules and eligibility requirements for OHP (Medicaid) due to recent federal legislation, and JWF knows that music workers are “particularly vulnerable”[1] to the impacts of these changes. Among the new rules are more frequent OHP renewals, and work requirements that will be cumbersome for self-employed people like most musicians and music industry workers.
As recently stated in The Oregonian, “...Medicaid enrollees most at risk of losing coverage are those who are self-employed, students, caregivers and older adults… many could lose coverage not because they’re ineligible, but because of stumbles keeping up with stricter reporting requirements and more frequent eligibility checks.”[2] And, “State health officials have estimated that roughly 462,000 Oregon Health Plan members could be subject to the new work and reporting requirements.“[3]
Because of JWF’s dedication to supporting our music community's access to health coverage and care, and thanks to our partnership with the Oregon Health Authority, we are here to provide direct support through these changes.
On October 22nd, 11 AM at Musicians Union Local 99 in Portland, please join JWF and Oregon Health Authority staff for a presentation about these changes. Among other topics, we’ll discuss how to navigate new work requirements when self-employed with fluctuating hours and income, as is often the case for musicians and other music industry workers.
